DARWIN DRAMA FOR WILL

WILL DAVISON had a disappointing weekend in Darwin at the latest round of the V8 Supercar Championship.

Despite promising performances at the recent rounds, the Erebus Motorsport crew were unable to extract speed from the #9 Mercedes Benz on the new Hidden Valley track surface and in the hot conditions.

“Not a lot you can say … we came here expecting to be strong and we just didn’t ever get on top of it, we couldn’t make the car work on the new surface,” Will Davison admitted.

“On top of that the engine really suffered in the heat, which is an instillation issue, but once you giveaway lots of horsepower at the track with the second-longest straight in the country, you’re in trouble.”

FRIDAY

  • 12th fastest in opening practice on a brand new surface
  • 22nd fastest in 2nd practice

“The new surface threw up some challenges and we spent some time chasing the car, as well as trying things. We’ll digest it all and come at it hard tomorrow.”

SATURDAY

  • 2nd fastest in 3rd practice
  • Qualifies 21st for Race 13
  • Qualifies 21st for Race 14
  • Will finishes 14th in Race 13
  • Will finishes 19th in Race 14

“Terrible day today … couldn’t take a trick. It’s pretty frustrating. The weird thing is that the car was very quick in the cooler morning conditions, but the hotter conditions kills the performance. It’s not something we can fix overnight, unfortunately.”

SUNDAY
  • Qualifies 20th for Race 15
  • Finishes 24th in Race 15

“A shocker today … I had a throttle that was sticking a bit on lift-off and that caught me out at one stage, and I had a spin. But we were struggling anyway, the car is just slow on these new high-grip surfaces, like at Bathurst last year.

“And for a reason we’ve yet to understand, the car was faster on old tyres than on new ones, though I suspect that’s temperature related. We really need to understand this. Hot, hard day. We’ll have to turn it around for Townsville.”
