UPS & DOWNS IN NEW ZEALAND

NEW ZEALAND'S annual V8 Supercar round brought a mixed weekend of results for Will Davison’s Erebus Mercedes Benz.

While not having the ultimate pace to contend for a podium, Will ran strongly in the mid field throughout the weekend until problems intervened.

In the first race he was eliminated on the opening lap, sustaining terminal damage to the car after being spun out by another competitor.

The second race was kinder with a run to 13th, before overheating problems after more mid-field contact in Sunday’s longer race, left him to finish 16th.

FRIDAY
  • Clear but cool conditions
  • Two practice sessions today
  • Just outside top 10 in both sessions
“The ultimate pace isn’t there, but the car isn’t too bad. We didn’t run new tyres at the end (of practice) and lots of other people did. I think with a new set we could be around 6th to 10th on pace. Let’s see what happens tomorrow.”

SATURDAY
  • Will 8th quickest in final practice session
  • Will qualifies 12th for Race 28, on hard tyres
  • Will qualifies 16th for Race 29, on soft tyres
  • Will turned around on lap one in Race 28, car heavily damaged & retired
  • Will finishes 13th in Race 29 in repaired car
"That was disappointing,” Will said, referring to being spun out of race one on the opening lap.

“I categorically didn't see him (Tim Slade), he came from a few car lengths back and spun me and Fabian (Coulthard) had nowhere to go and hit me head on. It's disappointing as I felt we were moving in the right direction with the car.

"In the second race on the softs the car felt good and we collected a lot of useful data for tomorrow. All I can do is focus on day two now and put today behind me.”

SUNDAY
  • Will 2nd fastest in morning Practice
  • Will qualifies 13th for Race 30
  • Will finishes 16th in Race 30
“It was a frustrating race. I worked my way up to 11th and felt poised for a top 10 finish but a string of hits set us back and (from there) I needed to manage the car and finish.”
