TOP DOZEN FINISH FOR LIGHNING McQUEEN AT SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK

Running livery as Lightning McQueen from the Cars movie franchise, Will Davison scored a pair of top dozen finish in the latest round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park on the weekend.

Will took the Tekno team Commodore to 12th place in both races. “I am a bit disappointed with the weekend to be honest, because I felt we had the car to do better. There are glimpses of positives but as a team we’re not realising our potential,” Will Davison said. “The car was good in race trim both days but we are not finding the sweet spot with it in qualifying.”

FRIDAY

  • Sunny but very windy conditions
  • Will out of Practice 1 with a steering rack failure
  • Will is 12th fastest in Practice 2

“We lost the first session almost completely with a steering rack failure, so that put us a session behind for the whole day. So in the second session we concentrated on getting the race setup rather than a qualifying setup, even so when we bolted on fresh rubber at the end we weren’t too far away. If we tune it up for qualifying it should be better again. A promising start.”

SATURDAY

  • Will 9th fastest in Practice 3
  • Will qualifies 14th for Race 17
  • Will finishes 12th in Race 17

“Once again we had our dramas … I got turned around at turn one when I got squeezed … that spun me to the back of the field and destroyed the tyres. So we had to make an early stop and that was the right call, we made up lots of ground because of that and would have finished higher but a safety car cost us our margin. It was a good outcome considering what happened at the start.”

SUNDAY

  • Will qualifies 16th for Race 18
  • Will starts 21st after penalty
  • Will finishes 12th in Race 18

“We ran a really good strategy today, I think, the car was good in race trim, and we had the potential for a top six or seven result. Unfortunately, the (timing of the) safety car destroyed our race and absorbed the chance to salvage something more.”
