WINTON WOES

After the euphoria of our win in the west, things didn’t go quite so well at Winton.

In some ways there are similarities between Perth’s Barbagallo Raceway, built in among the sand dunes to the north of the city, and Victoria’s Winton Raceway, built in sheep paddocks near Benalla, a couple of hours from Melbourne.

Technology has tripped up many a successful motor racing program over the years but in our case it wasn’t a particularly advanced piece of technology that got us … just a flat battery!

At the crucial moment, just as a safety car was called in Sunday’s third and final V8 Supercar race at Winton, my engineer Luke Mason’s radio failed unexpectedly.

It’d been working perfectly all race to that point so Luke didn’t immediately know it had failed, and was busy giving me instructions to come to the pits under safety car to swap onto the soft tyres.

He didn’t know that I couldn’t hear him.

Problem was, I didn’t know his radio had failed either, so I’m asking him if they want me to pit and not getting an answer … of course I kept asking but with a dead radio, Luke couldn’t hear me.

By the time it all got sorted and a new radio swapped into the loop, I’d gone past the pit entrance and had to do a lap behind the safety car, which absolutely killed us as everyone else in the field peeled off into pitlane and put on soft tyres.

At the restart I was a sitting duck and everyone went past me, and it was game over for us.

I eventually pitted and put on the softs, and on fresher rubber caught and passed the leaders and ran just ahead of them for the rest of the race!

That proved at least that we had race winning pace and maybe we could even have won it if things had gone our way, but for some flat batteries …

Actually, realistically I thought we were on for a top five for sure, and maybe a podium was possible, but truthfully we didn’t quite have the car at Winton that we had at Barbagallo.

But we are making progress and I’m heartened by the fact that we seem to be contenders wherever we go now, and we’re only going to get stronger as we develop the team and the car.
