PASSING IN PUKEKOHE

PUKEKOHE WAS a bit of a mixed bag for the Tekno crew last weekend.

In a very competitive field, we qualified in the top ten three times out of four times. We also ran inside the top ten for all of the New Zealand races, except the last.

While that’s by no means a bad result, we did struggle trying to find the right answers for speed at times throughout the weekend.

Given how even the entire field is, passing opportunities are at a premium at Pukekohe, particularly with a format that included, four short, sharp sprint races.  So qualifying well is critical.

The nature of the fast corners at Pukekohe creates a lot of dirty disturbed air. It means you can't really stick to the back of the car in front of you. Otherwise you end up over-heating your tyres, so it's a real juggling act.

So it's all about picking your moment, and trying to pressure someone into making a mistake - which of course doesn't happen much in our category at the moment!

I think next year at Pukekohe  it would be great to go back to the soft tyre and throw some strategy into the mix with pit stops to shake things up a bit.

We had good, competitive pace on the weekend, but we were still a little way off those top cars.

Our Commodore is fast and we’re strong in the races but we don’t always get it right. In the search for extra speed we sometimes over-step the mark.

Our focus now shifts to the Homebush grand final and championship position.

I am currently fifth in the title chase, which is amazing given we are a very small, single car team. With 300 points up for grabs at Homebush, it’s still possible to grab third place in the Championship if I have a really good weekend there.

So there’s plenty still to play for with one more Supercar weekend to go!
