BATHURST 12 HOUR WRAP UP

CONGRATULATIONS TO my mate Jamie Whincup on his first up win in the Bathurst 12 Hour race for GT cars on the weekend.

As we all know, the race has gone from strength to strength these past few years and it was another cracker this year, with twists and turns all the way, lots of action and countless safety cars.

Jamie, Triple Eight teammate Craig Lowndes and Ferrari factory driver Toni Vildander were the trio to beat all day, their Ferrari 488 having too much pace for the rest of the field when it mattered.

And Maranello Motorsport and Triple Eight combined resources brilliantly to deliver a well-executed victory.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t on track to be part of it.

Driving one of the factory McLarens for Tekno, I’d headed to Mt Panorama really keen to do well after the disappointment of 2016, when we’d been put out of the race early after damage when we got hit by another car.

On Friday we were solid and working on the race package … I was driving the McLaren that won the 2016 race, sharing with Jonny Kane and Ben Barnicoat, neither of whom had been to Mt Panorama before.

So it was important to give them the bulk of the running, much as I wanted to get out there myself!

Once we put the McLaren in quallie mode, though, I knew we had the package to put the car on pole.

I had the first run in Qualifying, on a not-quite-new set of tyres and set a time that stood for second fastest for a long time, with the intention of getting back in for the final 20 minute qualifying session.

I then handed over to Ben, as planned, to get some more track learning in.

Ben was getting quicker and quicker, but unfortunately, on what would have been his best lap, he lost it at the exit of the chase, and backed it into the wall.

Bathurst bites hard and Ben was devastated, and Jonny and I just supported him as much as we could … he’s a good young bloke with a good future. He took it pretty hard but he will bounce back.

While the hit didn’t look too bad on TV but in fact it torn open and badly twisted the rear sub frame, a part that the team didn’t have on hand … the only one in the country was at a workshop on the Gold Coast.

Tekno immediately organised to collect it and, after dismissing the idea of sending it down by helicopter because of failing light at the end of the journey, arranged to fly the sub frame commercially to Sydney.

Meanwhile, the crew began stripping the car in anticipation of an all-night rebuild.

Sadly, the sub frame wouldn’t fit into the cargo hold of the plane … and with no other way of getting it to Bathurst in time, it was game over for us …

BIG NEWS to become public in the days leading up to the Bathurst 12 Hour was the announcement that Woodstock has come on board as a new naming rights sponsor for Tekno.

I’m pleased to confirm we’ll be carrying the Woodstock colours at the major races of 2017 … it’s great to see such a valued brand staying in the sport and increasing its profile with a naming rights program, so I am delighted to welcome them on board.

Also confirmed last week was that the most experienced Supercars engineer in pitlane, Campbell Little, has joined Tekno.

Everyone in the sport knows who he is and what he’s done … although ironically given we have both worked at many different teams along the journey,  this will be the first time I have worked with him, though I have known him and respected him for many years.

I think Campbell’s experience is ideal for Tekno … because of our close alliance with Triple Eight and Campbell’s history there, I think he’s the ideal choice to interpret how we can maximise the package we have.

Having that experience and a highly organised mind, not to mention a fresh set of eyes, can only be a benefit to the team.

Will.
