2017 TEST DAY WRAP

AFTER THE disappointment of not making the starting grid for the Bathurst 12 Hour race a couple of weeks’ back, it was great to get behind the wheel of my Tekno Commodore for the official Supercars Test Day at Sydney Motorsport Park earlier this week.

Resplendent in its new Woodstock colours, the car looked great on-track amid a sea of new looks … just about the whole field seems to have refreshed liveries and some sponsorships for the 2017 season.

Key motivator for the Test Day was the introduction of the new ‘super soft’ Dunlop control tyre, which will be used at certain events this year, so the Sydney Motorsport Park outing was designed primarily for everyone to get to grips (sorry!) with the new tyre.

But while that was an important component of the day, in truth for all the teams it was a chance to test for the first time in 2017 ahead of the start of the supercar season, in Adelaide in early March.

At Tekno it was particularly important because it was our first day with new Engineer Campbell Little.

I’ve known Campbell for years and always got along well with him, but this was the first time we’ve worked together.

We needed to learn how to interpret each other’s language, how we described what the car was doing and how we needed to change it, and Campbell needed to learn our car and how it reacted to changes.

In many ways we went right back to basics, and built from there. A lot of the day was spent building up a base of knowledge about the car and, from Campbell’s perspective, what I like in a car.

I have to say it was a very productive day and I really enjoyed working with Campbell, his experience and knowledge is going to be a real asset to Tekno this season.

Conditions at Sydney Motorsport Park were very hot so track temperatures were up, so there was a lot of slipping and sliding around, and during the middle of the day everyone found themselves chasing their tails a bit.

Because the track was so hot and slippery, there just wasn’t the grip to really feel changes to the car, plus the conditions meant there was high degradation to the tyres.

The new Dunlop ‘supersoft’ control tyre wasn’t as different as I thought it was going to be but nevertheless it required some setup changes to get the best performance out of it, and make it live as long as possible.

We made lots of changes across the course of the day and after losing our way a little in the middle of the day when the track was at its hottest, we found ourselves with a pretty good car at the end of it.

Our Woodstock Tekno Commodore was there or thereabouts on pace compared to our competition, it felt pretty good to me, so I’m encouraged with where we ended up.

As always with off-season testing, you never really know where you are in comparison with everyone else because each team is running its own specific test program.

Guess we’ll all find out at the Clipsal 500, round one of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, in 10 days’ time!

Will.
