THE RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK

Right now, I am doing everything possible within my powers to be on the grid at Phillip Island this weekend.

I am feeling better every day and am hopeful that I’ll be fine once I step aboard the rebuilt Tekno Commodore on Friday.

I won’t lie, I am still in a fair bit of pain, although it is at its worse first thing in the morning. Once I am up and moving, it’s a lot better.

Since the accident at Symmons Plains 10 days or so ago, I’ve taken the doctor’s advice to rest and let my body recuperate, and to not start any training at all until this week.

I’ve done all that, gone really easy on myself – which is hard to do because I train pretty seriously most of the time – and tried to ease myself back in, without aggravating anything.

Healing takes time and there’s no quick fix, the body will heal in its own time.

Earlier this week I spent a couple of hours in the Simulator which was another step forward in my rehab … it went well & I felt pretty good afterwards.

That’s only part of the story, of course, because Tekno has had to perform miracles to get our car repaired in time.

From the moment the wrecked car arrived back in the Symmons Plains garage, it was obvious that the Tekno Commodore was in pretty dire condition.

The original plan, pre-accident, had been to pre-prepare it for the Phillip Island race weekend in the days after the Symmons Plains race, then send it over to Melbourne on the Ferry mid-week.

But all that had to change … instead the team got the transporter an early slot on the Ferry on Sunday afternoon, and then drove through two nights to arrive back at the Gold Coast workshop on Tuesday.

The wreck was then stripped and sent to Pace Innovations, where the chassis was straightened and repaired, the work so extensive that they virtually had to build a new chassis front and rear.

Pace went above and beyond to help us, dropping everything to prioritise the repair, as did a number of other suppliers including Triple Eight, and I just want to say a special ‘thank you’ to all of them for doing so.

Having got the chassis back to the Tekno workshop, our small crew set to work to build up what’s in many ways like a new car … so much was damaged in the accident and had to be repaired or replaced.

The Tekno crew worked right through Easter … in fact, they worked for three or four days without even going home!

They slept in the truck, on the floor, wherever they could, just grabbing a few hours here and there, to get it done.

Everyone came together – it gives me goosebumps to see the attitude of everyone at Tekno, there was never any question of doing anything other than try to fix the car in time for this weekend.

They missed out on valuable time with their families over Easter … I can’t thank them enough for the work they’ve put in, and it’s inspired me to do well for them this weekend.

Even with that huge effort, the Tekno transporter will probably be late arriving at Phillip Island simply because there was so much to do to fix the car.

But I know it’ll be pristine and ready to roll out of pitlane on midday on Friday.

I know I’ll be a bit sore but I’ll do everything I can to get through … I can’t wait to be back aboard.

Will.
