CONSOLIDATING CHAMPIONSHIP CHANCES

Great to see Will Power finally nail a win at the Indy Grand Prix on the weekend.

Australia’s Indycar star has endured a tough start to the year with ill-timed safety cars, a puncture and just plain bad luck robbing him of a couple of potential wins this season.

But at the Indianapolis road course he put together a pretty flawless weekend, quickest in all practice sessions, grabbed pole, led the majority of the laps, and romped away at the end when it counted.

I know Will’s relieved to finally get a score on the board … and it’s perfect timing for his confidence ahead of the Indianapolis 500 later this month.

How good would it be to see Will become the first Aussie to win the Indianapolis 500?!

Dan Ricciardo finally scored his first podium for the 2017 World Formula 1 Championship season in Spain on the weekend, which was also great to see.

Red Bull went to the Barcelona track with all manner of upgrades anticipating they could close the performance gap to the hitherto dominant Mercedes and Ferrari cars.

But worryingly, those teams went with upgrades too and while qualifying looked promising, in race trim the Red Bull was even further away from the ultimate pace than it had been in the first four Grands Prix of the year.

Dan was the only car in the field not lapped by the end … but it wasn’t that far away from happening.

Five races into the season it’s clearly going to be a two-horse race between the Mercedes and Ferrari teams for the world titles, with Red Bull best of the rest and with lots more work to do to get onto terms.

At least the next event, the Monaco Grand Prix, is the race where ultimate engine power matters the least, so it’s probably Dan’s best chance of a win in the near future. Imagine that, Dan Ricciardo wins the Monaco GP and Will Power the Indianapolis 500 on the same day…

That would be a dream come true for Australian motor sport!

Buoyed by our first drama-free and competitive results of the 2017 season in Perth, we head to Winton this weekend keen to consolidate.

I was going to use the word ‘capitalise’ but I don’t want to over-state it … first and foremost we need another incident-free weekend across both races, with solid finishes.

Our over-arching aim at the moment is to see how far up the Championship chase we can climb, so scoring points every time out is the top priority.

I’ve won one race at Winton, way back in the DJR days (!), and after 29 Supercar starts at the Victorian country circuit, I certainly don’t under-estimate how hard it is to have success there.

It’s a tight and technical track, and overtaking is difficult unless you have a clear speed advantage, so the racing can tend to be a bit processional, and forward progress is usually determined by clever strategy.

Nonetheless we’re going there optimistic, on the front foot after Perth … I’d like nothing more than to reward the hard-working Tekno crew with another top ten weekend.
